Are you constantly feeling overwhelmed by the constant flow of emails, texts, and phone calls?

A common example is thoughts such as “OMG there is sooo much to do today! This week! This month! I literally don’t have time to breathe. Arghhhh. Ping there goes my phone tweeting away, oh wait that’s Facebook. Has Sam got back to me about the listing on Calgary Street? S#!t! I need to call my mother about picking up the kids from school”.
Does any of this sound familiar?
Overcoming distractions takes some serious discipline. Like writing this blog post for example. I literally had to put my phone on silent and put in my room and leave it there until I had finished writing. It was way too distracting.
The constant flow of emails streaming in and pinging, or the texts, let’s not forget the myriad of phone calls I receive daily. If this sounds all too familiar to you, then you my friend also you have what’s called “Shiny Ball Syndrome”.
What an earth is that??
Well it basically goes something like this.
"Oooh look this new book/online course etc is being released,I must buy that".
Oh is that a facebook message?
I’ll just message Jan back now.
You are constantly getting overwhelmed by all these shiny objects or distractions as they are otherwise known as.
Do you find yourself constantly starting new projects and never finishing them?
Do you get easily distracted and have a short attention span?
These may be symptoms of Shiny Ball Syndrome, a condition characterized by the constant distraction and inability to focus on one task at a time. Symptoms include:
Starting a project or task and never finishing it.
Constantly having new ideas and starting them and never finishing them.
Getting distracted easily.
Losing focus easily
Start reading something and lose interest
Short attention span
Sound familiar?
So if that is true, why do we constantly put ourselves under so much stress trying to juggle 5 or 10 things at once?
Women are the worst at this.
They are constantly thinking of a series of things at once.
For Example: You are in a meeting. Yes you know the one I mean.
The boring one which goes on and on.
Not only are you in a meeting but, you are having a whole other meeting going on inside your head.
So you find yourself on your phone flicking through facie, texting, tweeting and not only that you are also thinking about how you must really go to the gym tonight, which vendor needs your urgent attention, and most likely what your partner is doing as well.
And this my friend is just during your Tuesday morning meeting!
Phew!!
No wonder you are tired.
You have so much going on upstairs.
Now, what I want to talk about is FOCUS!
Yes I actually want you to think and stop and be present when you read this. That’s it put down the phone, get off the phone even! Unless of course you are reading this on your phone or tablet...
Now, what is FOCUS?
It is when you are completely present with the one task at hand you are doing.
When you are writing, just write.
Sit down and put away all the distractions.
Put away anything that you don’t need right now.
When you are talking to someone be present with that person.
Stop using distraction as a thing to do.
How do you feel when you are out to lunch with someone and they are on their phone constantly? laughing about something someone has said. ‘Hello, I’m here’ you think to yourself.
What is the point in going out to lunch with someone when they are off talking to someone in cyberspace?
Do yourself a favour and when you next catch yourself doing this.
STOP and check in with yourself.
Do you really need to be on your phone?
Brian Tracy says that FOCUS is the single most important thing that you can do to improve your productivity.
By diverting your focus all the time you are diluting your effectiveness. Learn to be present and mindful with the things that you are doing.
Brian Tracy tells a story about Bill Gates who is one of the richest men in the world, Warren Buffet the richest man in the world and Bill Gates Senior who were at a dinner party.
A man came up to them and asked them “What would you say is the most important quality of success?”
They all broke away from the conversation at the dinner table and turned and simultaneously and said “Focus. Focus is the most important requirement for success in our fast moving world today. If you can focus, you can succeed and if you cannot you cannot succeed. It’s almost a black and white thing”.

What I also picked up from this podcast was that he talks about obsession with technology and staying connected is killing people.
You cannot stay connected if you are constantly looking at your phone! Spend time thinking and thinking clearly as it is the most valuable asset you have.
